Thank you  for visiting my website!

The primary purpose of the site, is to show a selection of the many

works and projects that have kept me occupied, over the last decade

or two, or three, or four…

I have recently been working on a series of paintings  inspired by the old harbour,

at Watchet and decaying breakwaters at Porlock, Somerset.

A series of  paintings inspired by the unsung paraphernalia

to be found on other parts of  the coast,  is now

keeping me busy.

I lived on the Isle of Wight, until aged nine ; Brading and Shanklin. My family then moved to Haslemere, Surrey.

My constant efforts at painting and drawing were rewarded when I won a Scholarship to Farnham School of Art.

There I was able to study all the disciplines they had to offer, eventually majoring in illustration and print-making. I then worked as an art director

for the advertising agencies : J .Walter Thompson and Young & Rubicam, in London and Milan.

On my return to London, I concentrated on painting, intermixed with freelance commissions. ( I had to pay for my art materials somehow!)

Commissions included : exhibition design, house magazine graphics, PR promotional material, posters and book design.

During this period I worked on a series of books for children, using acetate filters.

Over the following thirty five years I’ve been lucky enough to have had more than a hundred books published.

The majority contain a ‘novelty’ element integral to the storyline.

I have always enjoyed creating and constructing the so called ‘paper-engineering’ included in the books.

The ‘magic’ of making something three dimentional, from a folded page, never fails to fascinate me.

The ‘Pop-Up Theatre’ I created with David Wood is a good example. David and I have worked together on over a dozen books, all with an inter-active device of some kind.

*Our latest Pop-in-the-Slot / Lift-the-Flap, book :’ SCARY MARY’, will be available on www.amazon.co.uk May 1

Click on : www.davidwood.org.uk  for more information!

The reader removes Scary Mary from the pocket on the front cover.

The story is advanced by sliding Scary Mary into the slot on each right-hand page.

‘Mary’ pops up, and scares, in turn, her brothers, her granny, her dad, her baby sister and her grandpa,

until, the tables are turned - she gets a big scare herself!

Finally, Scary Mary pops right out of the book, ready to begin again!

I have continued to paint and draw thoughout the years ; abandoned buildings, rusting machinery,

discarded objects, bleak landscapes – Exmoor and North Wales are two of my favourite places.

My oil painting of an abandoned locomotive, (Corrosion IV), was exhibited in the Royal Academy’s Summer Show , 2010.

I have two sons, from my former marriage  : Tom Fowler, a talented guitarist

and Simon Fowler, a gifted illustrator and printmaker.

The majority of my illustrations and several paintings are available for sale.
